Aspen Education Group is not yet done dealing with the suspicious death of Sergey Blashchishen, the 16 year old who was attending their SageWalk Wilderness Camp in Oregon (SageWalk is also where the infamous “Brat Camp” was filmed). Yet they press on! The don’t let yet another simple death or the holidays allow them to shy away from shameless marketing. I just received this press release in my email inbox about Aspen Education Group’s “SUWS Adolescent and Youth Wilderness Programs.”
The press release is entitled: SUWS Adolescent and Youth Programs Finds Holidays Are an Effective Time for Troubled Teens to Attend Wilderness Camp
and here is an excerpt:
To avoid spending one more holiday season with teens who are acting out, disobeying house rules, or engaging in risky behaviors or substance abuse, some parents give their teens the gift of wilderness camp – and an opportunity to get away from the stress of the holidays and work on themselves.
A wilderness therapy program can improve a teenager’s coping skills, communication skills and self-esteem in a safe and nurturing environment, providing them lifelong benefits and a chance to make future family holidays memorable for all the right reasons.
And yes, the SUWS program has experienced their share of tragedies, just like most of the other programs out there that bill themselves as “helping teens.”
Here is an article I wrote back in July of 2007, “What Sets Aspen Education Programs Apart from the Rest?”. Things are no different today than they were over two years ago when I wrote this article, except that more teens have died in the name of so-called “therapy.”
Parents BEWARE!
