In the Morning Journal from Ohio there is an article called Ex-county worker indicted: Video shows Detention home employee slamming teen onto table. You can see the video if you click on the above link.

Some of the comments that follow the article amaze me…. such as…..

” The punk kid probably had it coming to him. “

” Maybe if more of these juveniles were afraid of authority we wouldn’t have so much trouble. Maybe if we weren’t so soft on them, they would fear the detention center. Not view it as a vacation away from home. Cable Tv, computers, pool table, schooling. free meals. When people start fearing Jail again our society will start becoming a safer place. Consequences for your action…. “

To be fair to all of those who commented on the article, there were just as many who criticized the “supervisor’s” actions.
Unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions when it comes to these kids… everyone assumes he deserved what he got… but if you look at the tape and read the article, you can see that this is a classic case of the Lucifer Effect.
Even by the supervisor’s own admission the boy really didn’t do anything to cause him to deserve having his head slammed into a table…he presented absolutely no physical threat to the supervisor.

“Catalano told deputies he was forced to restrain the teenager and slam him on the table because the teen was verbally abusive and refused to listen to orders.”

Usually it is only justifiable to use physical force when someone is threatening your safety.  While there may have been ‘verbal abuse’ (there’s no way of telling if there was or not) you can clearly see from the video that the boy is cooperating with the supervisor, and is in no way threatening the supervisor.

This boy received 17 stitches to a split chin, and while this is “bad,” where is the outrage when these things happen in private “therapy” companies when there ARE NO cameras watching.

This happened where are guard/supervisor knew he was being taped…imagine what happens off camera.

These types of institutions bring out the worst in even the best of people, it’s a natural phenomena among human beings.  To better understand how certain institutional and residential situation do this to people, please see Dr. Zimbardo’s book The Lucifer Effect.

The Stamford Prison Experiment in the early 70’s was his first social psychological experiment in this matter and was expanded on in his latest book, The Lucifer Effect.

The nature of institutions has to change before these “evil incidents if injustice” are to cease existence.
